Orange blossom is bewitching, sunny, intensely floral and imbued with the sensuality of sun-warmed skin. A diffused animalic note, derived from the flower’s naturally occurring indoles, heralds the arrival of Defender’s essential heart: night-blooming jasmine, an intoxicating flower, full of licentious imaginations, the perfect fulcrum of this narcotic centrifuge. Jasmine is one of perfumery’s most precious and versatile flowers, desired for its carnal sophistication, a voluptuous whiteness enriched with pungent sap-green facets.
Distinctive luminous molecules lend a sunny sensuality to particular white flowers such as jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose, neroli and gardenia. They may initially have an animalic edge, but the warmth of the skin softens them, revealing a warm and irresistible beauty before settling into a narcotic calm.
For Defender , a sample of night-blooming jasmine was collected on the night of the summer solstice in an English country garden. The flower is at its most olfactory at night, attracting moths and bats to assist in pollination. CPL’s patented Aromaspace technology was then used to create a powerful representation of the flower in the overwhelming heart of the scent. This perfect mirror of jasmine has a unique industrial hue, like a metallic powder dusted on a sharp edge. A floral blade that avoids too much intensity.
The jasmine contour is a charming blend of melancholic myrrh, with its earthy smoke and balsamic tone, mixed with a note of hay absolute, used by Defender perfumer Kamila Lelakova to allude to Boadicea's childhood, when she grew wheat and barley with her family.
The other keynote is a verdigris leather accord, created using Leather Fusion technology, another CPL patent. It is a seductive homage to the tactile and atmospheric nature of natural hides and skins. Leather in perfume can manifest itself in many ways: a beloved leather jacket, equestrian harnesses, haute couture handbags, luxury car interiors, scented gloves and book bindings. This scent is a powerful evocation of our experiences with leather.
In Defender , this malachite green leather note balances the floral and fruity notes that have developed up to this point. One might suggest that it evokes the handcrafted leather armor worn by Boadicea and the malleable reins of the chariot, with the hint of horses as she rode into battle.
Defender ’s drydown radiates upwards with vitrified amber and carmine musks, smoldering birch tar, guaiac wood and the chocolatey earthiness of mesmerizing patchouli. Peruvian balsam lends a rich sweetness, with vanilla and cinnamon facets. This sensual drydown is adorned with a filigree atmosphere of rum-tinged dried fruits. Responsibly harvested clary sage and labdanum enhance the skin with a herbaceous note of salty honey.
